Question about the USMC bust...

Sometimes i am nothing more than a little boy inside... i have no idea that is why i am asking: Does anyone have a clue what this thing is looking out of his backpack? I did paint it black for the moment and will work it as soon as i get to know what it is...
EDIT: Attention! I still got some stuff to glue on. Raffa and i had a phone call and it might be the place where the handhold of the bajonet seems to be glued. So it is a part of the backpack but it looks like some kind of box that comes out of the backpack... ay, ay, ay ... i guess i'll glue the handhold there and paint it up like the backpack... still intrested in your oppinions...
The Step by Step will proceed next week as this weekend becomes a bit hectic ;) - here is a little preview on how far i am. Not very further than before but i am cleaning up the mess at the moment slowly and after some time i will get to the detail work everywhere, soon but not yet... camouflage is also missing... so i am away for painting and relaxing into the weekend... and i have to fill up these to holes i've drilled in his right arm, no idea why i have done this, haha... sorry for the yellowish photos, they were made really fast...
May you all have a wonderful weekend, happy times with friends and your loved ones and some joyful moments at your workbench... Song!

Could be a hatchet or shovel, though with the indent, I'd guess it's a field book.
Not very clear from that picture but my best guess - handle of an entrenching tool?
Go to the Young Miniatures website and look under "products" > "Military busts". When you look at the pictures of the completed bust you will see how the handle of his machete fits into this canvas bit and how it should be painted. These pictures will also help you with the rest of the piece. ~Jim
