Yliad Games: Vorag Shaman

by Roman aka jar

Hello Jungle,

last week - the week before Monte - I was struck by the wish to paint up this model for my own collection of Yliad Miniatures. Sadly this range of models is not available anymore, but sometimes you can find some rare pieces on ebay.

If you know me and the way how I make a living as a self-employed miniature artist you might also know that most of my finished miniature projects are sold to collectors and supporters of my work. I am thankful for this as they keep something of my heart in their home and help me to survive as an artist. This being said, selling miniature projects also leaves me with mainly empty cabinets at home - no not really, I mean I collect miniatures from painter friends. This is what I do and this is what I cherish at home when I look into my own cabinet. Persons behind the models.

Well, some years ago I started a little project for myself: Collecting some rare miniatures and paint them up for myself, for my own collection. Just everytime I am in the mood to paint one and find the time I do. Since the last two and half years I managed to paint six. Now I want to tell you a little bit about number six:

In fact I unpacked him, cleaned him up and based him. On day one.
I started painting on day one too. I finished him on day four.

I have no idea how many hours I spent, but I was coming home late from the studio. I did never think about what to do. Just did. I never thought what to paint. I just did paint. I did not paint him for a certain reason. I just wanted to paint him.

This is the sensation of miniature painting, sometimes in a while this happens and it is just you, colors and music.

For me this miniature is one of the most beautiful sculpts on this planet. Why?
Well, back in those days when I started painting I admired the versions I saw of this model. Always. I never thought to get my own and paint one. I was just awe-stunned by the power of the sculpt with the right colors on top. When I realized to get my own, I was shocked that the company was no more and models are rarely availabe on ebay hunting. So I sharpened my hunting spear and in the end finally got myself one.

When I first hold that sculpt in my hands I thought he would be much bigger (and it felt like Christmas), but no he ain't he is a regular 32 mm sculpt, but in my oppinion such a powerful one.

I enjoyed painting him up a lot, felt no pressure, no goal to reach, just me and painting and I enjoyed it so much. I think I went a little crazy with that base, but well, happens with me and bases once in a while.

That base, yes. For Number five of my collection I started to experiment with magic effects and even wrote an article about it. You can read it here!

I again used waterfilter balls, a lot of patience, superglue and a toothpick. Each of these balls has a name and several moments of "works-well-fixing" and several moments of "fail-fixing". Fun.

I even had so much fun to hide a small penis in there, great, eh?
Just did this because the sculpt roars "Testosteron!!", "Sacrifice" and "Cow head!" ...

Well, that's it. If you want to see more photos of my version of this great sculpt please follow this link to Putty & Paint.

And I even found some Work in Progress Photos - please click to enlarge:

I hope you like him!
Keep on happy painting!
Best Wishes
Roman
