This title stands for quality in convention teaching with some of the best instructors around the globe.

Let's bring this fella to the seminar rooms! Nauw!

My personal main focus on teaching at the NOVA OPEN 2018
was some days prior to the Convention, teaching my first two and a half days beginner seminar statewise. It really was a lot of fun and everybody just brought such a good vibe to it. Special thanks to Mitchell Carey for helping me with so many things that I am out of words to name them all.

Review: Private Coaching with Marcus

by Roman aka jar

Hi Jungle,
still some reports from the last year will drop in the jungle.
Things just happened to fast or time was spent wisely not in front of the computer, but well just blalalalabla!

Marcus
was visiting me for a two day private coaching.

Marcus' learning goals were quite precise:

  • Overall Improvement of painting quality
  • Technical support in color choices and application
  • learn to read and paint colors your eyes see, getting away from recipe color painting
  • painting Orc Skin
  • painting Human Skintone
  • painting metallics
  • painting the color "black"
  • additional "painting orange, skin variations plus detail and leather with texture
Marcus & myself

We both meet in the MV studio for the lessons ...

After theory and some introducing exercises about color choices and the readability of colors we got several models to pick from as Marcus arrived prepared.

Photo Fial!

After the theory we started with one of our main topics: Learning to paint human skin, mainly without a recipe ...

We also prepared other base colors on the figure to see the overall progress, to understand it better and to see how important it is to let everything grow beside eachother.

We even encountered a yellow donkey!

Then we pushed for contrast ...

After more explanations and theory Marcus arrived at this result with this training miniature:

Of course we did not forget the Orc subject ...

We both enjoyed two nice days in the MV studio.
Good chats, funny moments and fine music supported the rise of Marcus' learning curve on his chosen topics. Marcus left with a big smile and more Kame-hame-Ha! Powers in #happypainting!
Can not wait for your future projects, Marcus!
Thank you for making me a proud teacher!

Roman

FM: Bjornolf

by Roman aka jar

Hi Jungle,

FM = finished miniature :)

I got some to show you in the next couple of weeks. For some I might be able to write a future article, but this is for later, as I got to sort work in progress photos and see if I got enough.

Finished Miniatures ...
For example, Bjornolf here in
28 mm by Hasslefree Miniatures.

You can find more photos via Putty & Paint.

Of course I got inspired by one certain actor from the television series "Vikings". I even tried to catch the full nature of this character by creating the same chest hair and tattoos :D

This figure is for sale.
You can find details in my PDF cataloge if you want to support me and make this unique version of this miniature yours!

Step by Step: A cherry blossom tree

by Roman aka jar

Gooooooddddd
Morning MV Jungle!

... and welcome everybody to 2019!
May this year bless you with the joy of color and inner peace!

Soon we will present the winners of the MV Challenge 2019 to you, but before this happens I would like to start the year with a quick and free tutorial contrary to the snowfall we got this morning over here in bavaria:

Tutorial:
How to create a cherry blossom tree in easy steps
___________________________________________________________________________

During the private coaching with Johannes we both had the idea to finalize the beautiful base Johannes build with a tree. First we had to find a root that fits our needs and balance on the base via browsing a big box of roots and small branches.

Interested in how you can collect nice roots and branches for your hobby stock?
Check this link: http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2014/04/tutorial-how-to-find-good-roots.html

Or follow Raffa in this article on how he sculpted amazing roots:
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2013/05/touch-of-death-behind-scenes-sculpting.html

Step: 1
After this Woodland Scenic flock was glued to the tree with the power of superglue.
The photo shows the result. Another result of it, were fingertips packed with superglue. There exists a wide variety of different colored flock, but in this case the color did not matter as the plan was to paint it, strong.

Step 2:

Priming this was not easy, but I tried to reach every part.
I dropped the colors I wanted on the tree just straight out of the bottles. A little yellow to pump up the power of the magenta and a touch of green to desaturate it a little bit and make it fit to the greenish base below it.

Step 3:

I took a big brush and mixed my colors on the tree. Had to add some more as the flock was sucking paint like no tomorrow. Pink and Magenta were mainly used to have this powerful color.

Step 4:
That took quite the moment and left a big mess on my workbench. Some parts even fell off the tree, but usually I do not care too much: Everything happens for a reason, right?

It was such a colorful, beautiful mess and I had to hang the tree somewhere over night to let it dry and drop color (I placed something on the ground to avoid a magenta pool).
On my Instagram account you can find a short video of it:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BpIEFgIhE5x/

Step 5:
Next day. The first layer of color on the tree was dry and the flock was kinda rock solid now.
Time to drybrush and paint pure white on it for making these cherry blossoms bloom.

Step 6:
While Johannes was painting this amazing beautiful base I played some games with yellows on the cherry blossoms, airbrushed a glaze of green from below and painted the tree trunks brownish/green, but very desaturated.

Step 7:
Of course more time can be spent on this, but during the coaching it was important to see the overall idea behind that base and so the tree worked fine for this stage of work.

To improve this:
- add some white flock to the upper layer to give it more dimensions
- put more time in the tree trunk and branches color
- spent more time on the tree detail

Hope you enjoyed this quick walkthrough!
Happy Painting to you all!
Best Wishes,
Roman
