Chimp's Captain Maulg WIP 2

by Robert aka muhani

Hello again,

here is another work-in-progress-picture, I took right now:

Time is running very slow here in Austria and the picture is less to show you, how fast the progress is going on, than to tell you, that I'm still alive.
... more progress soon, I promise.

Workshop Review / Graz, Austria

by Roman aka jar

Aloa,

i am really organising myself upon here - so here we go with a review from my first workshop ever - done in the early months of 2009 in Graz/Austria.

Ok here we go... got a couple of coffees beside me and i am ready to review this weekend in Graz, with a lot of dwarf berserkers from Avatars of War, a lot of fun to paint, a lot of great people ... i guess it sounds stupid to say thank you Felix all the time, but i can't help myself, so again a big thank you Felix for your amazing support on my workshops...

__________________________________________________

First i have to thank everyone who has taken part in the workshop, specially to Robert (yeah this guy here - this workshop was our start of our friendship i guess) for his talent of organisation and his sister for being such an angel all the time. Another thankful shout goes out to Felix and Johanna from Avatars of War again who made this also happen like everyone else who had his fun on this very special event to me...

The workshop took part in the library of the techniqual university of Graz/Austria. Here is a little overview over the place we had under siege over the weekend:

Me and Robert totally confused - 30 Minutes to go... i am that ogre looking guy there:

The main goal of the workshop was:

Basic goal of the workshop is showing different perspectives and techniques to paint fast and well looking gaming miniatures while surfing through the history time line, art has gone in the wing of art history. To get to know and understand a lot of things like light work, colour concepts and theory out of the artworks from artists like Rubens, Giotto, Rembrandt, also actual artists and a lot more  to create an harmonic final look of a miniature...

As told above main concept on the workshop has been a travel through art history. As i am becoming a teacher of art class in Germany someday in the future i really tried to bring miniature painting together with ... Ãhm, i mean everything. I tried to show the people who have been participating at the workshop that a miniature is also a canvas like everything else you find in art, especially those great Avatars of War Models from Spain.

We met on Friday at 13:00 o'clock and started a bit with organisation talking and so on. Then planned the basework for the model. We had a lot of basing equipment with us and find inspiration in pictures of nature which i had collected and shown for this part of the workshop. One example of what i am talking about:

It was very important to me, that everyone creates a theme he wants - so a same final look of every dwarf has been deleted already at the starting steps during the basing. A little view during this process:

After this we started cleaning the models and preparing them for bringing them together with the base. That has been a very intresting part of the workshop because a lot of new ideas came up how to transform the different dwarfs. The participants of the workshop really took their chance to create everyone very individual, by didn't use the mohawk or cutting of the goblin head, already planned in their base concepts.

During Friday we also took our time to understand light. I mean unreal light - not daylight - and how it turns out in artworks, how it is used to set focus points, how to see light sources which are not a part of the artwork itself and brought all together on our canvas for the weekend the miniatures themselfes...

Also we've started talking about basic colour theory - how colours influance our souls, our emotional thinking and feeling. All things have been collected by the workshop participants themselves while browsing through art history with me as a moderator. I tested the people who have been taking part a lot, always asking about if they can explain light sources to train their eyes and seight...

Some pictures of the first day - cleaning and preparing the miniatures...

At night we went to get some food together and that was maybe the best thing we could do - it has become a bit like a family weekend trip from now on :)

_______________________________________________________

Saturday has been the longest day planned and it took even more time, because the fun was so big and i am such an hard teacher... i mean talker or whatever - thanks again for the energydrinks to Yozo ;)...

A lot of theory again in the morning about colour theory, choosing colours and a slow incoming change to get to the painting with first priming and a part of techniqual "How to's" let the midday meal become very quick and unintresting. Painting Time! Some really have been prepared like hell:

We also had some testing models when it came to painting, so that no one has to fear touching his dwarf with maybe a new technique or a strange colour combination... testing ground have been plastic demonettes by Games Workshop:

I can't remember everything only that my mind felt like exploding during this time and i became "Roman the Destroyer" because of bringing down 2 dwarfs from their bases... I guess i have never been this tired and empty inside my brain after this great funny day of Painting... i slept like a stone.

____________________________________________________________________

But Sunday came up with his full force and me with way too less sleep as needed and we even skipped the breakfast to have more time for painting, hehe.

We did a lot of demonstration painting this day about detail work, like leather, eyes, metallics, gems, clothing, blood and some more. During this we really used every inch of time painting like greek war gods... i had made about 300 kilometers this day while doing my round through the participants and their individual dwarfs... helping out, bringing some more input or just saying "wow" of the improvements made by them... a real joy!

To the afternoon some had to left the place because they had a longer way home but i want to say thank you all again for that great time. I hope everyone was happy with the workshop i have done there and i am greatfully thankful of every constructive criticism you gave me for my next workshops... it really was like bees and flowers, everywhere great ideas, thoughts and moments around those lillte dwarfes...

We took the chance to get some group photos of all the dwarfs which came up from the workshop. Not everyone is finished, but hey that ain't easy on a weekend when Roman (me, jar) is talking all the time - here they are...

Some quick shots of everyone of them...

The other dwarfes... uhm, i mean we all together now (only Roberts sister is missing):

Some more impressions on the workshop:

Painting was spread in Austria, hopefully a lot of painting meetings will start and as the participants said - we will do another one in Graz/Austria in one year, not a beginner workshop - more a high level Bob Ross lesson with totally energy...

Thank you again, Avatars of War to help made this happen...

Happy Painting!

Regards
Roman aka jar

PS: This was the last picture shot on the workshop... our batterys have been totally empty, haha i love to remember this moment in between all those other great moments :)

Kong's WIP Thoughts OCT04

by Roman aka jar

Aloa,

strong coffee even makes the laziest titan get brain active, so i am here to tell you again about the some moments i did spent on the BASH. As i am trying not to forget something about him, i will show you here some more steps further, still in the progress of finding my way through the miniature - it is still early progress on him... so be patient about this step by step - looking forward to the end, because i still don't know yet how he will really look afterwards, haha:

Ok, Purity Seals have been glazed several times (4~5) with Graveyard Earth, moving slowly darker in the later glazes with a tip of Dark Angels Green + Chaos Black (really small)... I want to show you how i use the brush here. Not with the Tip of it, i paint the glaze on it while moving the brush over it with the side, pulling the colour carefully from one place to the other... to colorize the bright underground i did set before - i mostly paint like this and mostly everything with this brush seize:

The bright eye, you remember pure white there was glazed with a mix of goblin green + ice blue + tip of white, very thin, several times...while a bit of dark angels green was brought in for the lower part of the eye... looked like this on my wetpalette:

The reds have been brought a bit more brighter with using a tip of Fiery orange in the basecolor, added some Dwarf Flesh in it for a subtile Highlight on the edges... red is a bad color it mostly goes up to pink, so don't highlight with pure white or something near this.

The metal parts have been set with a dark metal tone of Vallejos Oily steel 70865 + a tip of Chaos black. The Skulls and boneparts in the end have been highlighted with a tip of Codex Grey in Dark Flesh. More to come here soon, very subtile.

The red wax dots of the Purity Seals have been darkened with a mix of Scab Red + a tip of chaos black, also did use this mix for some more intensed shadows on the red armour parts.

The white 'honour snake' thing there has been darkened a bit with of the Purity Seals Mix of graveyard earth and the tips of dark angels green and chaos black. Really thinned, just to get a bit more definition in there. The next steps will be cleaning up the mess and work more in the lights and shadows... here he is in the acutal state of  Progress:

So far from the BASH. After the chaotic base of Cain and Abel did provocate some minds in some forums, what really isn't a problem, really everyone has the right for his oppinion and i know my bases are sometimes on a thin line of really weirdo and highly strange i have decided to show you another strange WIP which waits for the muse - it will be painted to a very nice australian painter guy for an miniature exchange someday... that base is really weirdo, haha (as far as i can remember i have used an old MiniDisc Player, broken apart and used several parts in there for it and much more, ay, ay)... Toxic Girl by Fatal Personality, a great sculpt i totally adore:

I hope you like my vision i had for her... someday she will be painted to finish for sure... When the muse will come to carry my soul through this chaos on this base, haha...

Happy Painting again and again... if you can don't stop :)

Regards
Roman

PS: Whoho! I found those cool Fallout 3 Models, mostly scratchbuild - have a look:

PPS: I did try to take a shot of Cain and Abel in my cabinet, with lightning but it ain't very well too, so it might be up to you to find out how they look in real somewhere in between my photo experiments:

Cain and Abel Duel finished

by Roman aka jar

"Abel and Cain

I

Race of Abel! eat, sleep, drink.
God smiles on those that he prefers.
Race of Cain!in swamps that stink,
Crawl, and die the death of curs.
Race of Abel! your crops sprout,
And your flocks are safe and sound.
Race of Cain! your guts howl out
In hunger, like an ancient hound.
Race of Abel! warm your guts
At the patriarchal fire.
Race of Cain! in caves and huts
Shiver like jackals in the mire.
Race of Abel! Pullulate :
Your gold too procreates its kind.
Race of Cain! Hearts hot with hate,
Leave all such appetites behind.
Race of Abel! grow and graze,
Like woodlice that on timbers prey.
Race of Cain! along rough ways
Lead forth your family at bay.

II

Ah! Race of Abel! your fat carrion
Will well manure the soil it presses.
Race of Cain! One task to carry on
Remains for you, a task that presses.
Race of Abel! Shame is nigh.
The coulter's beaten by the sword.
Race of Cain, climb up the sky,
And to the earth hurl down the Lord."

Aloa,

Cain and Abel, a duel which really has something into it from the depth of my heart these days. It shows the fight against my own inner bad guy - reasons won't be told because this goes way to deep and personal ;)

I have used 2 Red Box Games Miniatures, Bolverk the Bold and Conrad the Crazed for this epic duel. A pleasure to work with again and again - thanks to the Sculptor Tre' for making such cool models and help my ideas and visions get manifested. Who is who should be up to your own imagination. Sorry for the picture being so big in its seize - please be patient:

Kain and Abel

For information about the Duel check out "Kong's WIP Thoughts Oct01 ~ 02"... i hope you like it - it is also up to CMON if you want to vote or drop a line there - would make me very happy and happy is good:

Kain and Abel on CMON

This one is a gift for a friend from Italy - because in Paint we trust - i have planned to visit and finally meet him this year, but i wasn't able - so this is for you my friend MXP, you'll get it when we meet because shipping is not an option. I am so much looking forward and i hope the gods may be with us in the future. So far it stays in my cabinet :)

Happy painting all around the globe!

Kong's WIP-Thoughts Oct03

by Roman aka jar

Aloa,

Red Wine is empty now and i got no bottle left - ahhhh! So it's time to write a bit about what i have done to the Terminator (BASH) before i forget everything til tomorrow. So here we go - sure i will add the complete Tutorial afterwards, when the model is finished. See it like a sketchbook here...

As the competition rules say, only the normal base i am planning to make it rusty for the moment - after the comp i will add a bit more to the base ;) - rusty, ok? What is best to do rust? I often start with real rust pigments, which i get from Steel wool, laid down i a small 'container' with water for some days. The Steel wool fades away while the water vaporizes and left stays rust. At this point i want to thank Picster who got that crazy idea some months ago - it works really...  you can also get these pigments from anything rusty, just choke them down and stomp them small. Everytime you hit them with water they will work to their own new look, haha. So far this is how this 'container' looks at mine:

As the base has been basecoated with Dark Flesh i just put it up there with some water on an old brush. More to come with this later on.

I next put my attention on the Purity Seals, which i basecoated with 2~3 Layers of Rotting Flesh.

The main attention following went on the black armour parts where i put a bit of Bleached Bone into the base mix of Chaos Black with a tip of Ice blue, to set some more highlights on the miniature. On the red parts i did the same with a bit of Tanned Flesh given to Red Gore, but that is not really available to see - more to come on this point later on...

The Genestealer rests have been painted with a basecoat of Chaos Black +Regal Blue + Dark Angels Green and have been highlighted wet in wet with adding some grey and as far as i can remember a bit of Bleached Bone. His teeth got painted with Dark Flesh.

The stormbolter was painted in chaos black + ice blue, which i still got on my wet palette.

Now, think, Roman think... uhm japp - a tip of white has been set in the Rotting flesh to highlight the Purity Seals a bit. Pure white was set in his intact eye. Pure white was used to paint those belt/stripes honour things he got hanging around there. The latest black mix was used brighter on the edges by adding a tip of pure white. The red things from the Purity Seals have been done with a basecoat of Red Gore.

The Genestealer's teeth have been highlighted with a tip of white. The whole Genestealer rest has been washed with 510 Gloss Varnish from Model Colour with a tip of Chaos Black in it - also added water.

The Crux Terminatus has been basecoated with pure white and was washed with Badab Black. Also every blood drops and later gems have been basecoated with pure black.

Looks all a bit weird at the moment but time for detail will be later on - i next will go up on highlighting the reds and make 'em a bit cleaner... Slowly eats the squirrel ;) - Read you soon!

Let's see what the muse brings up tonight... Keep on happy painting all around!

Regards
Roman

PS: Ah ya, i have switched the wooden socket, because there will be added some more stuff after the comp.
