First, i am no fan of dead animals at my workbench. So i will lose some words about this fishhead here. Yesterday we have been to the brother of my girlfriend who is in love with the hobby called fishing. I personally don't like fishs at all, i would say i hate them - they make me be scared of open water. So i was not really happy with goint to his place and watch them smoke some fish. In the end we took two home for dinner and i did not eat them as i really have to say: fish scare me :D
It really feels we Bavarians are barbarians at least to me after being at such an event. Bavarian Barbarian for President! Inspiration is everywhere - but i am Jack and hit the road now ... keep your eyes open!

Today with start with something unusual, it is called "Let's help Iain". Iain did ask me about a project via mail and sure i'll find some thoughts for him but i also thought to involve our readers a little bit more - so let's help Iain!
I will introduce the project of Iain with a quote and some pictures of him and i am sure we'll find a good solution all together to make his brother really happy on his birthday - Iain? (For this posting you got to sent me your final gift for your brother as i am really interested in it)

I have been seeking advice for a project I'm undertaking and so far no one has been able to help. I'm hoping yourself, or the rest of the guys at Massive Voodoo might be able to shed some light on the matter.
My brother is a Policeman and it is his birthday the week before Christmas. I was browsing Foundry one day and happened to chance across some Victorian Policemen and figured I'd make him a diorama for his birthday. The diorama is going to take place on stone bridge under an old fasioned gas street lamp. It's going to feature two villains and two police officers. One of the villains will be punching a policeman clean off his feet while the other policeman and villain will be rushing in to support their colleagues. That's the aim anyway...
Ideally I'm going for this kind of look - a dressed stone balustrade.

I am quite prepared to scratch build something but I need something for the pillars. I've had a look on Hirst Arts but not come across anything that quite does what I want. So far I've managed to find some Dolls House stair spindles that might do the job, however if you can think of anything more appropriate I'd greatly appeciate any help.
I'm also wanting to use some sort of drain/manhole cover. Any suggestions there?

Following up is just my own brainstorm - if you as a blog visitor have any suggestions or ideas hit the comments and help Iain!
Mmh... my approach would be like Robert did the railing at his Frutti di Mare. I found some photos of it and try to explain what i did - i can remember some of this work he did as it was very loud and i was painting at his place.
Final result:
Use some round wood sticks in the thickness you prefer. I would recommand using hard wood, no balsa wood or something as it can split during the process. Some fine rasps too.
Put them into your drill machine. Be careful and make sure the wood is really locked up in the boring socket. Then carefully, let the machine do her work and let it turn - more slow than fast so you have much better control. Use the fine rasps to surf the wood and bring it to form.
Robert is a madman and i always see it in such precise work he does - really adorable result. I am not sure if it helps you exactly. Maybe you can also buy railing parts at a Ship Modelling store. Maybe you could buy greek vases in fitting scale to use their basic form. Mmh, mmh ... finished Robert Madness:
Maybe you also can do the same thing with gypsum, BUT please wear glasses or diving googles at BOTH, wood or stone as it can split and crush into your eye. Guess i would not do it with a stone or Gypsum as this is even more dangerous. Don't do it with harder stuff than wood, my suggestion.
I hope here is some inspiration included - thanks to Robert for providing these good explanation photos! If you got an idea please share it with Iain!

Starting with 2 SciFi sockets for Secret Weapon Miniatures today - they have been well sanded and worked with Vallejo Putty 401 for being perfect to cast. Now comes to build up. WIPs will follow.
The nurgle boy gets details - just black and white at the moment. I did "sculpt" a "Nurgling-wtf-thing" on his base and made some photos of my progress. It is really nothing special and great but i think i'll write up an article about it, because the simple things in life also can bring joy :D
Still much to do on that guy and as I tell sometimes i do some black and white photos to check the light situation on the model. There is still a lot to do for me here but i'll be back with news sooner or later. Black and white today - but i won't let you out of this posting without looking at colours:

Damn - yes, i love that hobby too much and just can't stay away from my brush. I find my soul in this dance with the brush and just can't calm down even when i try take a weekend off. Somehow i do take the weekend off as i am getting away from the everyday internet madness of facebook and emails and forums and ... all that stuff that makes your brain dance in circles sometimes. Don't you worry i soon will be able to write emails again but not this weekend. Ok damn, there was something i wanted to tell you - my lady went out tonight with Raffa's lady as he is already safe in Italy and will hopefully have a great time there at tomorrows Games Day ... mkay, ladies away, me sitting here with Peter and painting again on that ugly Nurgle Generals ...
As we do some photos during the process i've decided to do a little sketch in Photoshop on Peter's Miniature. We also chat and talk about both of our models and somehow i felt Peter tried to tell me something what he wanted to change. He somehow wasn't able to focus his thought or really find words for it. I felt his thought (wouhou!!) - somehow i sometimes feel colour (wtf?) - and i knew that he was talking the right thing. He just lacked at the ability to see the way he wants to go at the moment while painting this model, so this photoshop sketch was a good way to demonstrate and make him see the way he can go. Sounds pretty strange but it was fun for both of us learning together that way - in the end our résumé of this case is: a light won't work without shadow ...
I just did that little test on the skin as you can see. I was thinking to do the armour parts too but in the end i wanted back to my brush again :D
What I did:
Looking at light and shadow at Peter's General i saw a good shadow/light contrast. Somehow it felt that his midtones between the darkest shadow and the final light were not there or missed at importent places. Going for these midtones with some powerful* colourful glazes and the whole miniature gets warmer, deeper and stronger ...
*powerful: Not a colour that has much grey in the mix. With much grey it won't make BAM! in your midtones it just makes it powerless - but maybe more realistic in the end. Whatever, the trick of a strong light/shadow play lays within the midtones and the bravery to go a straight path in the maximum light hue of the colour tone ...

PS: Oh dear yes, this goes back to a naturally flow, straight from the table - let me know what you think about such quick drop ins - do they help when they appear? Can you see what is tried to be explained? Ai this is dangerous i guess - you might completly take me for a freak or get what i try to explain ... Damn! :D
