Earlier this year I had a two day private coaching session with Meike! Meike approached me to improve her painting skills - which were already quite impressiv for the short time she paints - and to learn more about color theory, color choicses, painting techniques and my painting approach.

I usually do not teach masterclass seminars, but when I do these seminars focus on one subject, because they aim to teach you to master a certain topic. This Speed Painting Masterclass is all about speed, efficency and zombie hordes. 

Main topics:
- Learn to paint a Zombie gaming figure in about fifteen Minutes
- Speedpainting techniques and training
- Learn these techniques on Zombies, but learn how
to put them to your other gaming figures too

It felt really cool to prepare the classroom, still unsecure if students would really show up :D

But they did, coming from all over Germany ...

"It was late in the night. I found myself opening my eyes to many again.
The roleplaying round was tomorrow, and I needed these 8 goblins.
There has to be a better way to get pieces ready to play quickly ...

Cut to September 18, 2021.
Roman Lappat's first speed painting course after the corona break.
Oh, where the bad C word was just mentioned. Roman carefully checked the vaccination status of all participants as we gradually arrived. Of course, he was also vaccinated.

After we had prepared everything we needed on the seats, it started with a slight delay.

First theory.
If you attended Roman's beginners workshop, some things seemed familiar. Where and how to use contrasts. And the most important thing: make a plan beforehand.
But that was all dealt with very quickly.

After that there was a demonstration by Master.
A zombie painted in 15 minutes.
It was completely different from what I had imagined.
- No contrasting colors
- No inks over zenith primer
- Nothing I came across on YouTube.

But a great result for so little time.



After an explanation of the technology, we could also do it ourselves.
Everyone got a couple of zombies to paint.
That was a fun.
Of course we weren't that fast at the beginning, but we kept getting better.

Since I didn't always want to use the obvious color scheme, I oriented myself to different cartoon characters.

Roman was always available to answer questions and all participants were extremely nice (if you book a course with Roman, you can't be a bad person).

It was a very nice day with an almost family atmosphere.

Unfortunately, I have to stop writing now, it's getting late and I still need a few more goblins for tomorrow's round. But that's no longer a problem."

Es muss doch eine bessere Art geben, Figuren Schnell spielfertig zu bekommen...

Der erste Speedpainting Kurs von Roman Lappat nach der Coronapause.

Oh, wo gerade das böse C Wort gefallen ist. Roman hat von von allen Teilnehmern gewissenhaft den Impfstatus geprüft, als wir nach und nach eintrudelten. Er selbst war natürlich auch geimpft.

Nachdem wir uns auf den Plätzen alles nötige vorbereitet hatten, ging es mit leichter Verzögerung los.

 Als erstes Theorie.

Wenn man Romans Beginner Workshop besucht hat kam einem hier einiges bekannt vor. Wo und wie man Kontraste einsetzen sollte. Und das wichtigste: sich vorher einen Plan machen.

Aber das war alles recht schnell abgehandelt.

Danach gab es eine Demonstration des Meisters.

Ein Zombie in 15 Minuten angemalt.

Es war komplett anders, als ich es mir vorgestellt hatte.

-        Keine Kontrastfarben

-        Keine Inks über Zenitale Grundierung

-        Nichts was mir auf YouTube untergekommen ist.

Aber ein Spitzen Ergebnis für so wenig Zeit.

Nach einer Erläuterung der Technik dürften wir auch selber ran.

Jeder hat ein paar Zombies zum bemalen bekommen.

Das war ein Spaß.

Natürlich waren wir am Anfang nicht so schnell, aber wir wurden immer besser.

Da ich nicht immer das offensichtliche Farbschema nutzen wollte hatte ich mich an verschiedenen Comicfiguren orientiert.

Roman stand jederzeit für Fragen zur Verfügung und alle Teilnehmer waren ausgesprochen nett ( wer einen Kurs bei Roman bucht kann kein schlechter Mensch sein).

Es war ein ausgesprochen schöner Tag mit fast familiärer Atmosphäre.

Leider muss ich jetzt aufhören zu schreiben, es ist schon spät und ich brauche noch ein paar Goblins für die Runde morgen. Aber das ist jetzt ja kein Problem mehr."

Hey all,

welcome back to my little series where I show some projects I finished over the course of 2020. Today, it's time for some ancient Roman action - of course in 1/72 scale.

This mini comes from the Republican Roman Infantry set by Zvezda, which is probably my favorite set of 1/72 soft plastic minis. The scene portraits a princeps of the Republican Roman Legions throwing his heavy javelin, the pilum. In the 4th and 3rd century B.C., the principes were rich citizens who could afford heavy armor. Later, at the time of the Punic Wars (3rd and 2nd century), the principes were recruited from experienced soldiers "in the prime of their years". Armed with two pila, sword and shield, they would form the second line of the legionary battle formation, behind the less experienced and younger hastati, and would come into action once the hastati were unable to hold the line.

I imagined this Roman legionary to be fighting in some engagement during the Second Punic War in a dry, hot environment, maybe at the Battle of Zama. I attempted to capture the heat and dusty atmosphere in the warmish colors - and, of course, the base. The inspiration for the shield art comes from an artist rendering of a later Roman legionary, so it likely is not really historical. But I liked it ;-) I learned a lot while painting this mini - it was the second time I tried my hand at NMM...

earlier this year I enjoyed painting up this Gellerpox Infected Brute by Games Workshop.
It was a lot of fun and also the head swap makes this beast a unique monster on the gaming board.
Such large surfaces are always fun to play with color variations and powerful brushwork!
