Aloa Jungle,

Splash?

From the start. As some of you might have recognized I was quite busy with several things the last weeks. I was planning blogposts ahead and wrote them to appear while I was travelling. Just to not see our jungle dwellers getting bored somehow.

Well I was also very busy with plans and projects since my first art exhibition earlier this year.
This event lead too many new ideas in my brain that are soon able to see sunlight. One idea that was already shown is Fehur, the Treeman.

Printed Miniature Art

One idea out of it were my miniature art postcards,
another one is a fine artprint by one of my favourite projects called
"the Nightwatch".

This project does mean a lot to me. You can find a full step by step on it here on Massive Voodoo. The original is now at a collector's home and I am really happy to know that is in good hands.

I got asked by a good friend of mine, Manuel who asked me for an artprint of this project on demand. The idea and how it turned out was just beautiful and we both agreed on that this does make a hobby room something special:

Manuel's workspace with framed miniatureart artprint of the Nightwatch
Of course signed and as limited, numbered.

I showed this to some friends and had to order another small amount of numbers.

I decided to limit the number of these prints to 75, overall. So far 7 already are in their new homes without announcing it. Cool, thank you very much! One was auctioned via Nova Open Charity Foundation. Another one can be won via a raffle in the actual MV Competition. All you got to do is take part.

Product details - this ain't no poster:
Size: Motive 40 x 40 cm, Final size: 46 x 46 cm
Limitation: 7/75 (15 are printed, we print on demand, shipping time can be up to two weeks)

Get yours online!
Or check back with Mr's Lee's booths
on Euro Militaire Show or Scale Model Challenge.

Printed on handmade Hahnemühle William Turner 310 g/m² paper this limited print of 75 pieces shows Roman Lappat’s project called “the Nightwatch” in high end quality. A beautiful piece with a matte look for your hobby cave or even your living room. Miniature Art for your wall, not framed. Each print will be signed by Roman Lappat and numbered.

This idea of mine will be distributed by Mr. Lee's Minis.

If you want to get yours, check their store not only for high quality artprints.

Still? Splash?

Ogre Maneater, sculpt by Roman Lappat, painted by Kirill Kanaev
(thx Kirill for letting me use these)

"The townsfolk of Riverside used to tell the fairy tales about Ogres from the hills to their children to frightened them and make them listen. One day the Ogres came down from the hills and now there is no townsfolk anymore, Riverside burnt to the ground and all children eaten. An ogre raid is no joke."

Well yeah, got more to say on these things I was working on. You might remember my Ogre bust that I once sculpted? It now is available via Mr. Lee's Minis too.

If you are interested in a full step by step article on how I sculpted this Ogre check the magical link you just might have skipped.

So far from the splash news!
Keep on happy painting!

Mu 99- Fehur, the Treeman

by Massive Voodoo

Aloa Jungle people,
today it is time for another review on MV.

This is review #99

If you are interested in getting to know more products we regularly use, check the overview on the Miniatures/Material Unpacked, in short MU.

Today we will have a look on "Fehur, the Treeman" published by Mr Lee´s Minis (concept by Roman Lappat, sculpt by Romain van den Bogeart).

Some of you have already seen this bust on the internet, painted by Roman.
Peter
just got his hands on one of this beautiful kits. Let´s hear what he has to say about the walking tree.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peter: I had the chance to get my hands on one of this beautiful kits before the official publication. Roman asked me to do an honest review here on the blog and I will be happy to do so.

Many of you might have already seen the boxart, done by Roman. I was lucky to follow his steps on the bust while visting him in the studio. I realized, how much power Fehur incorporated. There are no weapons, no big unrealistic boobies, no armour, not science... in short: nothing typical from the world of miniature painting... just a simple smile and a peaceful appearance. In addition, the animals and especially the bark would be a very interesting experience to paint. I was looking foreward to a peaceful and challenging paintjob.

This bust is now leaving pre-order phase and is now officially available for order at Mr Lee's Minis or via email to mrleesminis(at)gmail(dot)com or ready to be picked up at a show with Mr Lee's Minis booth. For example this upcoming weekend at Euro Militaire or Scale Model Challenge soon.

Now, let´s have a look at the parts you get:

The kit consists of 8 parts:
  • body
  • 2 owls
  • 5 small limbs
The kit´s first appearance is pretty good.
There are no airbubbles or damages from the casting process. A bit of cleaning will be necessary, but this seems not to be a big issue.

Let´s have a look at the main part, the body:

Oh, he is smiling... I really like him already. The squirrel on his shoulder supports his peaceful look. The cast itself looks very good as there are no mouldlines visible.

His sides are covered with tiny details and there is so much potential to be harvested with the brush. Little work with a blade or sanding paper has to be done.

On the back and his right side are small mouldlines, but nothing which should bother an experienced painter. Ten minutes of cleaning at maximum.

The fixpoints for the limbs look clean and there shouldn´t be any bigger problems to glue them on place. Perhaps a bit of gap-filling will be necessary, but this could also be achieved with thick super glue.

A look at the two owls:

The owls are an interesting detail. They don´t seem to fit any specific race. It´s more like Romain was inspired by a number of different scources and tried to find a compromise, in order to give the painter as much room for interpretation as possible. Nevertheless, the quality of the sculpt is awesome and the cast has no flaws.

There is one point for concern.
The drains for the resin were positioned at the end of the tiny tail feathers. When removing the spare resin, you have to be very careful not to break the feathers. I suggest a thin resin saw.

A look at some small parts, the limbs:

Fehur has five small limps which are separated from the main body and have to be glued. As you can see on the picture, there is a bit of cleaning work to be done. Due to the casting process, it´s always hard to prevent any moldlines from appearing.

Final look:
Unfortunatly, I forgot to take a picture after assembling the bust. But here is a picture just right before I primed my version (with a bit of additional details).

Summary:

Fehur, the Treeman is a very interesting and unique bust. The look, the peaceful appearance, the challenging structures and volumes... this is surely not a bust for beginners and needs a good preparation in oder to not lose yourself in the sculpt. It´s also not a bust to show off your super smooth blending-techniques. No, this bust is made for having fun with color. Fehur is already on my table and after getting used to this new concept, I really enjoy the hours with him very much. In my opinion, it´s one of those busts you will always remember for the freedom it offers and the challenges you met on the road towards the final brushstroke.

Review: Private Coaching with Johannes

by Roman aka jar

Hi Jungle,

another private coaching review dropping in. More to come soon!
This time Johannes from Austria booked a two day private coaching with me to tackle and improve his understanding of painting and sharpen his painting skill. Well, he did not book it actually. It was a birthday gift from friends. Great friends, eh?

Feel free to contact me for your private coaching!
Right now I am slowly filling up dates with two day MV private coachings and I am already planning into 2018. I am also planning weekend seminars in Augsburg in german and english language for late autumn and winter 2017/2018 these days, but as we have vacation time here in Bavaria I can not put down the venue right now, this will all happen early September. Stay tuned!

Allright, back to a really friendly person: Johannes.

I did not meet Johannes before the coaching. Not on one of my beginner classes or else and therefor I really was excited about the topics we decided to talk and paint us through via the two days of the coaching:

  1. basic knowledge of atmosphere
  2. from tabletop to display painting techniques
  3. learning to understand and paint skintones, fabrics, leather
  4. learning to understand and paint true metallic metal
  5. tattoos

A though call on topics for someone who does not know me teaching and comes right from the tabletop army painting to the MV studio, but I was able to make Johannes happy from his look on the following photo:

Johannes & Roman

As Joahnnes already mentioned to me during the coaching that he does not feel so comfortable with writing up a personal review in english language we both just decided that this is fully my turn.

Johannes arrived with a cool sculpt by Latorre and after a big theory bomb we decided to start working on it ... Lathiem Oakleaf. During the progress we aimed on reaching our goals in the upper topics. Not many photos were made from my side as I was pretty busy with teaching and helping Johannes all around.

Training the painting muscles.

Lathiem Oakleaf after our two day coaching. No not really, final photos are missing, as we did the true metallics in the end. Gna!

I mean why we did not make anymore photos during painting? Well I'd say because we had so good talks about music, life and painting experiences. Thank you for two nice days, Johannes and thanks for being my student.

Base to go ?

Did you ever walked nearby a perfect little twig or a bit of sand who would look too good on your next base but you where not prepared to take it with you?

Here is a simple 4 Step guide for you how I prepared myself for this kind of situation.

Step 1

Find a cool box not to big not to small

Step 2

Personalize the box

Step 3

Put a small zip bag, a bigger plastic bag and a bit of patafix/bluetac in there

Step 4

Take it with you where ever you go and be prepared for base-treasures

Happy Base-Material hunting!

Inspirational Winds

by Roman aka jar

Well Hel,

not often do I get sucked into a pc game anymore, but Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice kinda got me. Emotional wise, picture and ambience wise. Just a small selection of screenshots I did while discovering Senua and her story. For inspiration and also to let you know why I am saying that:

Well Hel yeah. Mkay. Inspiration dropped to the jungle and now to something - again confusing - but what brought me through jetlag after returning home from the US - watch in HD:

And some fine music, if you enjoy music. See more of my personal playlist on youtube.

Stay inspired.
Winter is coming!

Silverback - step by step
I encountered the sculptor of this wonderful head via Instagram and Tomek Radziewicz is a guy of pure talent. He is a full time sculptor, concept artist, creature designer, character designer, Sculptor the collector figure The Witcher III Wild Hunt.

Check his Instagram account for more of his beautiful work or check his artstation portfolio. We can already tell you that you might see more of his work here on MV in the future to come!

As a big fan of gorillas I have ordered this bust from him and not that Tomek is a really great sculptor, he is also a supernice person. Contact him for details on how to get a cast of some of his sculpts.

Gorilla bust how it arrived from Tomek.
Great cast in resin, head already on the plate and no mould lines to be cleaned.

I primed him black.

I started fingerpainting this bust, slapping my initial colorful vision onto the sculpt with pure joy.

More and more and a lot of green.

I really enjoyed doing this absolutely freely with my fingers. If you have no clue how a fingerpainting start can look, check this nice video by jungle brother Josua on facebook.

Why fingerpainting you might ask?
Are you guys nuts? You will destroy the miniature definatly!!

No we will not, it is just a creative way of expression to get a quick access to your vision and also a way to feel and understand the volumes of the figure better.

I worked a little more on my sketch
now using a brush and a wash of black to get some contrast in my mix. With thin glazes I have added a brown color to the upperhead and with this step also painting cold highlights to the dark and black areas of the silverback.

I love to play with all these textures Tomek added to the sculpt.

And I really love the colors that come into play while I paint on top of my fingersketch.

This bust now needed a character
and for me a good way to implement character to a bust is by painting the eyes. I did so on top of black, followed by white and added a black circle for the pupil and the iris. I also added more sharper shadow detail to wrinkles, painted his teeth and increased more highlights with adding more and more white to the mix.

Eyes

Next stage of work was on more clean ups and sharper details. Stronger shadows, sharper smaller highlights and using glazes to tint back an area to the color I want there, for example the upper brownish head. Some people always ask me if I can name a color recipe for what I have done and I lately give the same answer: No! I am starting my paintjobs from these colors,
and mix what I need on the fly.

I also decided to paint on the background. Brushstrokes that give a feeling of jungle. I love my brushstrokes.

A green intense influance from below.

A little brown to the eyes.

I can not tell you how much I love green!

Next painting steps were mainly going in again and again. Cleaning up here, defining something here or there. Increasing contrast with shadows and small highlights here. Tinting an area with thin glazes, recreating small highlight dots and edges when the tint went to strong. Wax on, wax off!

This paintjob was an absolute joy to do.
Started from a rough fingerpaint I worked my way into more and more details.

I am pretty sure I will paint more of Tomek's sculpts in the future. I love his styles and I love monkeys. Perfect match and I had so much fun doing this one.

Final photos:

A very arty paintjob some people told me, but yeah I like to enjyo my paint freely and sometimes like to slap it with my fingers. One day I will do a fingerpainting only bust, so I can say no airbrush, no brush used :D

There is even a small video I did of this bust, click!

This bust is for sale, if you are interested in supporting my art, passion and work check my PDF cataloge for more information.
Keep on happy painting and stay inspired!
