Review: Beginner Seminar in Augsburg, Germany

by Roman aka jar

"What a experience, a true teacher of the art"

- Brian M. E. White

Welcome to the review of this class
that happened at the end of 2018 in Augsburg.
I want to thank all of my students from this seminar. Many new faces, good laughs and a lot of miniature painting fun was filling up this weekend.

Well, Beginner Class?
What is it? A quote from the Workshop review section:

"The word 'beginner' might be confusing to many first time participants of this class.
It is not a class for 'only' beginners. In fact it is a class for every person, at every age interested in figure painting, whatever their experience level is.

'Beginners class' means here that Roman aka jarhead gives an introduction into his way of thinking while painting, in detail a lot of important theory is explained while doing a walk through Art History and is used in practical exercises. During the weekend you will not only learn to improve your painting skills, you will also learn the 'Why?' behind everything explained and with that you will be able to teach yourself in your own hobby future by just recognizing what nature has to offer.

The theory parts contain:

- Learn to see your world with different eyes
- Introduction into basing composition
- Learn how to feel harmony in different aspects
- Important contrasts for figure painting
- Explanation about how to paint a light situation on your figure
- Understand colour theory and learn how to use it properly
- Learn about different materials, their unique properties and learn to paint them
- Learn to lose fear of doing something wrong
- much more!

Roman's expertise in teaching this class is very high as he has done 65 classes over the last years and thaught easily over a thousand students in this specific class.

"What a show!
Roman's Beginner workshop is an intense, info-packed weekend that takes you from prepping your minis and bases all the way to the final highlight and that proud smile when you're done. And even if you are a veteran you can pick up tips and tricks while Roman explains patiently every step of his way of painting. We had such a blast with Roman's down-to-earth way of teaching, a ton of new materials, paints and techniques to play with and a fun group of mini-painting enthusiasts learning with us. I simply cannot recommend this class enough to everyone who's looking to kickstart his or hers painting skills while keeping the most important lesson a top priority: Painting is fun!

Everything started on a foggy morning ...

During Friday I prepared final matters for the seminar ...

As it was late autumn already it turned dark early. A welcoming sight, the venue ...

... but we made it a colorful weekend nonetheless ...
For example with toothpick art.

Friday night after some theory we started with building individual bases ...

I am not getting tired of saying many thanks to the supporters of this class:

Students who took the seminar for the first time were "forced" to paint up a demonette as their project. Repeaters of the seminar were able to bring their own project and individual questions. Some brought big miniatures ...

Tiny stones ...

This will be heaven, clouds ahead ...

On Saturday we started painting ... with tons of explanations ... and of course: no fear!

Creative explanation sheet!

As a teacher I am always amazed by the results of this weekend.
In the beginning most of the students are shy, unfamiliar with the workshop situation, a little shocked on how I explain my way of painting, but the ice breaks the more time is spent together and the painting fun arises.

Such a big diversity in the end results
as everyone is allowed to follow his vision and mainly learns to follow his vision. Beside of this, different painting techniques and a unique philosophy is explained.
I am thankful for such a nice group of students who made this weekend unique and a really good memory. Thank you all!

Keep on happy painting!
