The Nightwatch
"When night turns day to darkness,
"When night turns day to darkness,
ancient evil creeps out of long forgotten dungeons,
willing to wipe away the living,
but fear not,
the company around Rodar, the druid and Josephus, the monk
Wow ...
this one took me ages. Exactly around 2,5 years of motivational ups and downs but during the last months I sat down to finish it to proper result (I hope). All figures, excluding the dog and the mice are from the company Red Box Games. I so much love them as for me these are really great fantasy adventurers with tons of character.
The base was scratchbuild from Hirst-Art parts, some ... wait I won't tell you here. There will be a full step by step of this project. All hail to MV's year of the painter!
The first title of the project was "The Gang is all here", but to the end it came very clear that I want to honour a great painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, called "the Nightwatch" with it. I have seen this particular painting a lot during my painting classes as I explain some things on it during the class. During my studies some years ago I also wrote several works where I had to analyse different aspects of this painting and I so much love the composition and the drama of the light. I know it is not the exact same situation in my little diorama, but I felt it there somehow.
The last photo shows the project during the last steps of work on my workbench, while was painting the plinth black, a good moment after such a long time. Now no more talk by me ... done.

I hope you like it? You can also find the project on Putty&Paint.
Let me know what you think of it ... and I head for another painting class for the weekend!
Keep on happy painting all around the globe!
Best Wishes
Roman
Finally all this guys come together and they look amazing)
ReplyDeleteLappaticious!

Woo! So glad to see it finished, the final result. RBG does make such characters, so much personality in a miniature. Certainly motivation to paint more.
ReplyDeleteSPENDID!
ReplyDeleteWhat? No kitchen sink?! Ace job there man :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful miniatures and amazing display.
ReplyDeleteThis is extremely awesome! :D... Roman is establishing himself as the true MoHQuam (Master of the High Quality, Atmospheric Mob) Painter... Very cool Group! Only the very straight Wall aligned according to the Base Borders is so so... Great colours...
ReplyDeleteAmazing job, great setting!!
ReplyDeleteGreat base, awesome composition, arrangement of the characters is flawless. Love the colors, even though I liked the 'less-green' base a little better than the current color. ;)
ReplyDeleteSooo cool... It looked awesome to me when i saw the video a few yrs ago but this looks awesome
ReplyDeleteI finally you do something with the base. I can remember that you started a long while ago and sometimes i thought about it. i´m so happy that you make a such a great result with it and it impressesd me much!! i´m exciting to find all the details in it, like the original painting that you use in your workshops as example! Please do more of this kind of wonderful stuff!! greetings from the one arm painter!
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Such a present atmosphere /Hans
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your comments. It makes me really, really happy that you like that piece and shared your thoughts and impressions here. Also thanks to Paintbrush Warfare for his critics... I find some truth in some of his words. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteIve seen 'the Nachtwacht' in real life. OMG what a painting. You can just sit infront of it and look at it for hours and the longer you look the more you discover. I also get that feeling from this diorama so in that department you did a really good job! :)
ReplyDeleteHopefully the post will go through this time. :P
ReplyDeleteRoman, what an incredible piece of work this is man. I am truly humbled and honoured by this. Your works have always been a source of inspiration for me, whether you are painting an RBG piece or a piece by another company. You guys at Massive Voodoo always prove what incredible art can be achieved in miniature painting. I have had some deep deep artistic depression and quandary lately but I tell you now that looking at this piece of work dispells that curse! Thank you Roman! How can I ever repay you?
Much Love.
Always Your Friend,
