Tutorial: Metallic Color Comparison Chart

Posted by Raffaele "Picster" Picca

Hey everyone!

Finally it's done, a lot of time was invested to finish this project. This metallic color comparison chart is not exactly a tutorial but more a tool for every miniature painter, searching for inspiration or a specific metallic color.

You can find the full chart by clicking this LINK.

I painted a lot of plastic spoons with all the different metallic colors Roman and I own and Bene helped me out by shooting the photos.

I compiled all the photos, taken with the same light and exposure, into a chart to make it easy to find a certain color or compare two colors reflectivity, color, smoothness or shine.

I hope you make some use of it :-)

If you like this chart, feel free to give us something back by a small donation to the jungle!

Best wishes,
Raffa

  1. Thanks, that looks very helpful.

I assume the examples are all airbrushed?

  3. Great reference! Weird Aero Vision Space.

It confirms some of my tests. VMA Silver, Chrome & Alu look pretty similar, no idea why. Chrome has blue medium but the results are hard to distinguish. One bottle of VMA Gold I have also looks like that ("silverish"), but a second one looks a lot more yellow.

@David: yes, read the text at the top of the image, and also the notes in the titles.

  6. Thank you so much for your effort.

I am quite impressed by the chrome paint from Alclad 2. Is this an acrylic paint? Do you think it is also possible to use a brush for a smooth surface?

Seems to be that there is an typing error in the headline:

The metallic colors were then sprayed with on an airbrush.

I think with and on were mixed up.
The metallic colors were then spryed on with an airbrush.

  7. @David: Yes, as written in the description. All colors were airbrushed as it gives a comparable result.

@Kraan: As I wrote, we used only the metallic colors that Roman and I own. As I don't own any Tamiya metallics, they are not on the chart.
If you want to change that, maybe a donation will help me afford more colors ;)

@Anonymous: See above. We tested the colors we have. Colors are expensive and so I don't have them all.

@Zeph: Happy you like it ;)
I corrected the error in the headline.
Alclad 2 are lacquer type paints. To use them for the maximum effect you need a black, glossy basecoat and spray them with the airbrush and low pressure.
As far as I know, application with a brush is not possible. They are designed for airbrush use.

    Best wishes,
    Raffa

I was quite impressed by the difference between matte base coat and high gloss base coat. Now i know what to do if i want to have it really shiny!
