Dark Angels ... two in a row!

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

Aloa,

summing up the last weeks is already in preparation.
First drop is falling now ...

First I got a Dark Angel Space Marine I have painted in 2 hours as a gift to the one behind the Vienna painting class. It is indeed nothing very special, but in those 2 hours I was full with happy painting spirit.

Dark Angel Tactical Space Marine
Games Workshop, 28 mm

Also started as a quick project with the same plan to finish him in about the same quality like the Marine above - a Deathwing Terminator - BUT with more hours consumed by work as I found those place which did not leave me alone until ... gnnnarrrggglll!!! In the end he took me about 7 hours of work and I know many places where I could invest more time - but it was started as a quick project and it shall be one in the end.

Dark Angel Death Wing Terminator
Games Workshop, 28 mm

I wonder what comes next, as I got many photos of finished projects here.
Let's wonder together soon :D

Keep on happy painting!

Kong's WIP thoughts - October #02

Right here, right now ... there is not much going on. I am back from a pretty cool painting class in Vienna (review following soon!).

As I was already pretty much exhausted before going to the beautiful city I am even more now at home. I got so many things to do which take me away from painting the next weeks and so my projects, which I have many at the moment are in the waiting line, so my painting table looks just like this - with Bene's WIP bust in the background:

I wish you a happy painting time
and I am sure my brushes will soon dance again!

Mu 24 - Sherlock Holmes, Infamy Miniatures, 32 mm

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

Time for another Miniatures Unpacked.
Find those from the past behind this link!

This time I am up to unpack Sherlock Holmes from Infamy Minatures in 32 mm, sculpted by very talented MIKH. I already did another Review on one of Infamy's models, check it here!

First there is the manufacturer's commentary to the figure - copied and pasted from their homepage:

"The Kingpin of the London underworld, with a terrifying intellect matched only by his calculated evil, there is no crime in the city that Sherlock Holmes is not a part of in some way. His empire of crime spans the big smoke like a tangled web, and branches out across the globe, linked to terror on all four corners of the earth.
This 32mm scale model has been resin cast to the highest standards in a limited first run of 250. It is supplied unconstructed and unpainted
You will recieve:
  • One nine part Sherlock Holmes miniature (body, hand, backpack and six arms of which your choice of four can be affixed to the model)
  • One 30mm lip edged base
  • A hand numbered first run card, showing the concept art, painted miniature and gang logo.
The model comes in a miniature white craft box packaged with three layers of protective foam."

So far so good.
We did get a lot of information from that already. Nine beautiful parts bring this figure together in the end. It is indeed not the easiest figure for total beginners but every advanced figure painter will be able to build it up without too much effort. Let's unpack - opening the box brings a lot of foam for keeping the figure safe and a nice artwork of the model itself. What I miss kind of is a painted version on the sheet of paper. I am not sure if this has already changed due the finished version is already viewable in their shop ... ssssttttooOOOPPPP - on the back of the card there it is and I was just blind ... ai ai!

Taking a look at the nine parts of the box. Bigger pieces are cast in one, while smaller detailed pieces are cast in one sprue. The Resin is pretty good so it is an easy task to free the pieces for cleaning.

As you can see from the upper photo some cleaning work is needed but not that much. It is mainly small resin parts that are gone with a gentle cut of your hobby knife. I found two small mould lines on not important areas which could also be easily removed. No casting holes in the resin over the whole figure.

I really love the detail of the figure. As said in the beginning it might be kind of complex to build it up for the one who really starts with figure painting, but for those used to clean and glue the figure is a great example of the quality casts from today can achieve.

Sorry for the last blurry photo ... my personal fault!

I am not very good in spending points now for different criteria. I just tell you my first impression while unpacking and I can only say if you like Steampunk figures this one is a must have. A great character with such athmospheric equipment - get yours at Infamy Miniatures or your favourite distributor.

BANANALICIOUS INFO:
You can win 2 Infamy figures - both already reviewed here in the jungle - in the random price pool of the contest! Thanks to our sponsors, which you will find updated soon!

Keep on happy painting!
Best Wishes
Roman

PS: More Miniature Unpackeds ahead!!

Hey everyone,

being in front of the computer again for quite some hours searching and optimizing photos for the artbook...

So I thought a little blogpost to bring in some little change would be a nice thing...

Here's a little sculpt I did for fun while Roman and I had to take part in a residents meeting of our studio house...
He reminds me a little bit of Indiana Jones :D

And a great cover of the band from munich "This is the Arrival"; For the restless night people:

Chaos cultist and the melancholy of fall.

Posted by Raffaele "Picster" Picca...

Hey everyone!

Time is running by these days, it's not funny anymore.
This week gone by so fast I didn't even realize it is already friday.
Our Indiegogo campaign really gives me a lot of stuff to do and apart from preparing photos and painting stickers I have to type a lot of mails, answer questions and check out all the sources for news etc...... ohhh while we're here.. we almost hit the 11k stretch! YOU are AWESOME!!!!!

I barely made it to the studio this week and so I brought some sculpting stuff to my home to finish some last touches on a actual project. Deadline is next week so I'm in a big hurry with this one :)

Yes, doing a lot of photo work for printing...

This is where I spent my days right now... In front of my monitor.
I have a black drape behind the blinds so no light comes in there for the sake of color correction.
It's a bit frustrating sitting in a almost dark corner for the whole day and outside it's cold... almost melancholic but the POWER of our supporters is my motor and this motor got some serious ENERGYS!!!! wuahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

Apart from that I finally finished some new mini photos. As I didn't have much time and head for painting lately (apart from commissions) I only finished 1 mini. It's a chaos cultist from the new 40k box and he was painted just for fun.
The base was a little favor for Juweela to test our their new sandbags, really nice for faster projects :)
You can get them soon at PK-Pro!
So I hope you like this quick project, it was a lot of fun!
I wish everyone a nice weekend and a big monkey hug goes out to Roman who is in Vienna right now giving a painting class :)

Cheeeerio,
Raffa

Our campaign and daily life?

Posted by Raffaele "Picster" Picca...

Hey everyone!

I can't tell you how excited I am at the moment, this feels like a big rollercoaster ride with just enough calm moments to catch a breath.

At the moment as most of you know, we started our Indiegogo campaign for bringing you a nice Figure Artbook two days ago. Until now the feedback was really crazy, we already broke through our goal of $2.500 and actually reached the third stretch goal at $7.000.
We added some more stretch goals today because everything is just going very fast right now!

Right now for $35 you'll get:
- A Din A4 ~100 page, hardcover Artbook containing works of Roman and me.
- 4 different Massive Voodoo stickers, hard to get and one is exclusive for this campaign.
- A Din A5 ~30 page tutorial booklet
- A Din A5 ~30 page work in progress booklet
- Shipping included!

So I really recomment you to check the campaign out...
But enough "advertisement", I somehow have to write down something a little bit more personal about the campaign....

... It feels so crazy to suddenly have such a tsunami of work sweeping you off your feets... in a good way ;)

Calculating costs, making new graphics, calibrating monitors, searching and archieving high resolution photos of our works, removing dust and dirt in photoshop... and at the same time there is the everyday life, going in the studio and working on minis and commissions, cooking, watching "Breaking Bad" with my girl on the couch (and man this series is awesome!).

Today Roman left for his painting class in Vienna, for both of us this felt very odd.
Roman leaving is such times?
But hey because of that we cannot put all the other work on the side. Being professional can be very strange sometimes :D

I mean it's just the second day, but still it's a feeling so unknown!

Anyway, back to YOU!
At this point I want to shout out the biggest
THANKS
for everyone out there reading our blog and supporting our campaign.

Without every single one of you, this would not happen. At all.
So my deepest bow to the monitor :)

Best wishes,
Raffa

Defense of Athel Lorens and My Treasure

posted by Oli, HonourGuard, silver leaf

Hey readers,

after the weekend in Eindhoven at the Scale Model Challenge, I tanked a lot of motivation for my actual projects.. and now I want to show you two projects that I have built for the Golden Demon this year. I am not the biggest fan of Games Workshop, but I thought it would be good to try my best at their painting competition.. :D Finally I didn't win anything in the competition, but it's not a problem, I am quite happy with my painting results. It is always cool to win trophies, for an personal effort. But the most important is that you like what you do, and that your happy with what you do. I think in an other way you couldn't improve your skills, if your heart doesn't belong to what you do.
Let's come to the important part now, some new pictures:)

The first project is called "Defense of Athel Lorens" and shows a wood elf unit. I started this unit two weeks before the GD. One week I had free, on this week I painted the most time of the day. But this was really exhausting.. and took away the fun of painting a bit. But now it is ready:) I think that's how a wood elf unit should look like (from the idea, not from my painting), with a lot of nature and a lot of colorful colours.. okey this sounds stupid now.. so on, here are the pictures:

And the second project. I am a big fan of the Lord of the Rings, I had to make a scene that shows Gollum and Frodo, two of the famous characters from this story. I entered it in the GD too, as duel, I thought what would happen if Frodo saw that Gollum threw away the elven bread at the steep stairs. And that scene shows what should have been happen.. :) The title of this scene is "My treasure" in German language, I wrote in German, because this words are often spelled in the movie. My treasure... :)

So finally, I have enough painted GW miniatures for the next months, we will see if I make something for the next GD. There are so many good miniature companies out there, so I am very happy that I paint all figures and don't focus on any company. Let's see what time brings :)

Thanks for answers, comments and votes ;)

Best regards Oli

Jungle Report: Scale Model Challenge 2012

Posted by Raffaele "Picster" Picca

Hey everyone,

after some days of recovery I'm finally writing the jungle report for the Scale Model Challenge in Veldhofen.
As the organisation of the event, the Scale Model Factory came to us with the idea of having a Massive Voodoo booth at the event we happily agreed and Matt, Oli and Philip wanted to go there.
As there were some complications I took Matts place and quicker than I noticed the weekend of the SMC was coming closer and closer :)

Saturday

And then the morning was there! Waking up at 5:30 am is definately not my prefered way of starting the day, but 2 hours later I was arriving at Olis home where we changed cars, drank a cup of coffee and continued with our trip to Veldhofen. From there Olis dad Andy continued to drive (known here on the blog as Daddy Cool :) ).

Around 6 hours later we arrived at the location and my first impression when coming into the event hall was just "wooow!!!".... the place was stupendously large, everything was already prepared very, very professional and I never saw so many Ikea lamps with dayglow bulbs, ... amazing!

After a warm welcome by Robert Crombeecke, the organisator, who explained to us where our booth is and how everything will be going we were even more amazed as our booth was really in the middle of this big event and it was pretty large. With the most respect Oli, Andy and myself started to prepare the booth for the next day. As the event is only on sunday we had plenty of time to prepare everything, talk to other people that arrived on saturday and get used to this big booth.

Later on saturday there was a big buffet and some people decided to get a drink or two at the hotel bar... what a great time! There we met the folks of "Die Vincis" to have some nice talk and take some funny/stupid photos :D

After that is was really time to catch some sleep!

Sunday

After a very short night, we got up early to get some of the very nice breakfast and do the rest of the work on our booth.
Putting minis in the display cabinet and enter into the competition took us some time, but finally doors opened and lots of visitors came into the holy halls of the SMC to check out everything.
A short time later, Philip joined our booth to take some photos and catch some impressions of the event.

There were lots of retailers, hobby clubs and painting demonstrations by famous hobbyists like Adam Wilder, Jay Laverty, Luc Klinkers and Sander van der Does. So a lot of great stuff to check out :)
The competition was very nice and very good organized.

What I really liked at this event was the big area with all the hobby clubs working on their projects, giving little demonstrations and having a nice talk, really cool idea!

For us it was a very interesting day, too. A lot of interesting talk, showing some stuff and more talking :)

So, overall a very nice event, a lot of cool figures, vehicles and dioramas to see, a lot of nice people to meet and a very nice place to make such a event. Be sure to be there the next year!

Oh and the price ceremony was cool, too. Many of my friends came out with a happy face just like me. I won gold in Fantasy Master and gold in Fantasy Diorama. And it the and I even got a special creativity award :) Very cool!!! :)

Thanks again to the Scale Model Factory for inviting us, it was a great weekend!

Here are some more photos of Philip: LINK

Hope you liked this jungle report! Were you there too?
What was your impression? Tell us in the comment section!

Best wishes,
Raffa

Hiho!

I want to show you another figure I have finished lately, BUT  I do not have the good quality photos for you that you are used to, BUT that has also a reason. I gave the figure to Michelle while staying at Hamburg for his awesome help at both the painting classes. He did not take part at all but helped whereever he could find something to help and believe me this guy can search - Many thanks to you again, Michelle!

Thank you for the photos of the Stormtroopers new home:

Btw. after the beast was slain by thunderous laser fire from the Stormtroopers Lasgun he went out of ammo. Luckily he just used torpidity ammo! After he realized that no ammo was left he was caught by some of the rabbits gang members and was locked away in a cage of high voltage future glass until their leader will awake and decide what will happen to this small fella ...

_________________________________________________________________________________

Judging
The Jury consists of Roman and Raffa.
Very important for us is that you try to bring in good photos. Figures on bad photos can't be judged properly. We are judging the following points when looking at your entries:

- First Impression
- Athmosphere of the single piece/display
- Painting technique
- Basing

During the judging work we allow ourselves to move entries in other categories. We don't plan to do this often, but if some entry seems in the wrong category for us and is having unfair influance on other entries in the category we'll do. I propose you just have some trust in us in this case. We both are a good team when it comes to judging and won't harm anyone. We just want the Contest to be a fair one.
