Work in Progress - getting it done

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

These days I am still full of painting.
Time spent well on the brush.
Finishing off projects I want to finish.
Still time needed to get it done but in about 2 weeks it is time
to start with the "Chimera vs. Bellerophon" Project
and I am so much looking forward to it :)

The Rhino seems never to be finished but I am working on until the moment comes - for me this moment is still far away on that model. The Sentinel at last heads to an end, slowly. Both will be done for an online competition and time is running while I do some relaxed painting sessions ...

I wish you all some happy painting!

  1. Looking good Roman, Really like the rhino with all the animals on base. Is the skin painted with oils or is it all acrylics?
    Cheers

  2. So far it is all acrylics - I plan to work on the skin a bit more with acrylics and then do some minor oil work after the tribal dot painting scars ... whatever this will be in the end :)

Glad you like the Rhinoking so far! It looks like there is no progress to the last photos I have shown of this Work in Project but indeed it is ... can't wait to have him done with final photos, but this will take still a while :)

  4. Thanks for that.Is brilliant sculpt by Allan.
Can see the difference between wip photos in the skin and details.Smoother and brighter.
When you say about using oils later will that be
to highlight and glaze in different tones on the skin?
    Cheers ijee

Ough - a big amount of grey seems the perfect answer, but won't make you happy I guess. 2 Component Priming, Black, followed by white. I did paint a opaque basecoat on the whole figure with some Codex Grey and a drop of Bleached Bone, this was the basic tone. Let it dry. On top of this I did start of by painting a rough sketch of light and shadow on the whole skin due blending in the colours in my milky basictone that I put on top again. Because of the figures seize I did seperate it in different parts, like left leg, right leg, front torso, etc. - I went with some bleached bone in the grey over to mixing in on a drop of white for brigher areas. For the shadows I've mixed in - oh dear, I can't remember: some Black/Tourquise/Green/Brown, all mixed in gently in the basictone on the figure for the shadow parts. After this was dry I went on strenghtening the lights and shadow areas for maximizing the bright/dark contrast. Now at this stage I am on to rework the basictone with different shades of grey, like a greenish grey, a blueish grey, a purple gre, to get softer blendings and variations in the Skintone ... cleaning off the mess and coming into detail work ... oh dear, I am about sure now one understands me here :D - even myself has problems - I am painting wild and free, and it is often hard to exactly name one colour I have used for a material ... mmh ...

    @Ijee
Happy that it is visible, mean the difference. Wasn't sure about that. Yeah, I love Allan's sculpts. I am thinking about using Oils to maybe intense some lights later on and maybe use some glazes to bring some of my acrylic blendings where I have failed more together, maybe bring in some more intense colour variations on important parts ... you see I don't know yet :D

    Happy Painting! :)

It is hard to tell as the Sentinel was waiting here at my place for about a year to get really started. I started the basic work about a year ago and now just work out the detail work. I can't remember what colours I have used exactly. Some blue as basic colours, brought to light by adding a brighter blue, you can call it mixing the blue brighter and brighter with bright tones to paint the light situation on it. The shadows went the opposite way from the basic tone. Sorry for this not perfect explanation.
