The Knife Maker

Here is a great inspirational video of a knife maker from NYC.
Keep doing what your heart says and you will be happy.

It's from a series about products made by hand.

  1. That's some of the worst advise you can give to someone.

  4. Sorry, I don't want to be offense to anybody here, but I think this guy is a joke. Calling his knifs handmade is already a joke. A friend of mine is a real artist. He is blacksmith for weapons and knifs. But jerks like here in the video, wo don't really produce by hand (because the metal they got is all ready and the little left they are doing is) spill the sense of "handmade". And then customers come to my friend and ask, why this and that costs so much. To me(!) this is fraud. ... So if you really want to see whats craftmanship like an artist, look at this ... just imagine to work 50 hours just on one pair of clothes - now thats something: http://www.axonderschmied.de

  5. @ christoph

no offence but does your friend mine his own metal and coal? this guy is doing hand made custom designs. How is this any different from a carpenter he also uses ready made wood but it's still an art.

Or more related to this blog. because they buy some of their paints and models these guys aren't artists? Bit narrow minded my friend

  6. No sry not an ace post, because:

    1. You underestimate the craftsmanship of good carpenters. They do more than just polish some ready furniture
    2. I know at least a little bit about knife making and can tell you, that those knifes have as much handmade work as a ordinary quality industrial knife, but he labels it like if it is something special. I am not terribly skillful; still I could do such a type as this NYC guy in the video.
    3. You can see even in this video he gets already stamped steal and just makes the most easiest grip you can do. Sharping a industrial steal is also no big deal. Now compare:

    http://www.bilder-hochladen.net/files/4mg0-2i-2a38.jpg
and tell me again that you don´t see a difference.

You also would protest if someone just mixes some miniatures he bought and then would say ... hey these are self-sculptured miniatures just like from Romain Van den Bogaert. Thats how I see the analogy. And btw yes, Axon was experimenting with making his own steal in a "Rennofen", but stopped it after some time, because after roughly about 3000years exploding every natural iron resources in Europe there is nothing left you can use properly and get best results (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raseneisenstein).

PS: "Or more related to this blog. because they buy some of their paints and models these guys aren't artists? Bit narrow minded my friend" => we all know that you need much more to be a good miniature artist compared to this guy from NYC. And btw ... you nearly don´t have any boundaries, because you don´t have to use and work with it like with a good knife. So you are much more creative then this silly knifemaker. Just mixing and composing the right colours is hard.

  7. Hi Christoph,

I agree with you about the grade of craftsmanship. I don't want to fight here, but now that it's obvious you didn't understand the video at all I have to say something. You didn't get it in two ways.

First those videos are not about perfect craftsmen. In fact non of them learned his craft. These are people leaving their mind(fucking) job, they studied years for, and now started something where they create products by hand. It doesn't matter if they are doing it the best way there is.

And second you compare two total different types of knives dude. This guy is making kitchen knives not some fancy knives for hobby collectors or larp fans. His knives are at least 8h a day in use. No kitchen knive has such a handle. So if you compare do it right. Your friend has some decent sushi knives aswell. Take a look at thoses handles. Get it?

So it's not about what he does. Or how. It's about the fact he is doing it! And he is doing it with passion and success. People appreciate it, something he didn't get in his old job. That's why the guy is happy. And that's what it's about.

I suggest you watch some other videos on thisismadebyhand.com maybe then it dawns on you.

  8. Yeah... I agree on what you say Philip. You know the thing was about signing it as pure handmade. And btw... Axon makes knives / swords that are actually in use and not for larp or smth. like that. He doesnt makes deco stuff. Some friends of me have actually fightingswords from him since 5-10 years and they are still in use.
