Space Wolf WIP

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

I am honest. After several weeks without painting i was a bit scared to have a straight go at the Arkvenger. I soon will do the base and plan to make a video about painting it. This fear of being out of drill made me have a go on a test modell, just for calming my fear and getting back to colours. This Space Wolf (head is of an Chaos Barbarian from Warhammer Fantasy) is still Work in Progress, but i love to paint on him and i am looking forward to have a go at the Arky as soon my brush is hot again :)

Hope you like him so far! Still some areas that need Kong's full attention, better photos as those WIPs are a bit too dark (have done them fast) and in the end he really will be an evil kick ass Wolf listening to this song in his MP40K-player while hunting down the enemies of the Emperor to praise Russ - forget about those last words, they are just nerdish talk and my thoughts while painting him :)

Keep on happy painting!
Kind Regards
Roman

  1. Is it possible that you really listened to the critique yesterday? Somehow this is a clearer style than you would normally paint, especially the face and bear area...... really coming out nice!

  2. I guess... mmh... yes :D

For sure i am always listening to and appreciate every kind of critique, not really intently thinking about it during the painting itself but i guess it is for sure a drop in my pool of painting experience - thanks to you and the eyes of Julien Casses :)

  3. But the photo is still bad and too dark at all :)

  4. Well, the photo may be too dark but I still like the way it is going. The snow on the base is great, as is the glowing plasma effect. (don't see yellow OSL so often!)

Personnale critique would be that he looks a little too blue for SW. Not sure if it was intended like this or if it's the picture though. Anyways, that's a personnal taste, I prefer greyer (is that a word?) Space Wolves.

Keep on happy painting as you say :)

Many thanks for your feedback. The glowing effect is not done yet. It is just pure white with a golden frame so far. I am at the moment going for soem yellow parts on the armour and some freehand work, the OSL will be done in the end after mostly everything else is finished (still armour work, gold work, face work and tons of detail i find during painting)...

Jepp this is not the typical Space Wolf when it comes to his armour colour. I was mixing this tone from several Vallejo and Citadel Colours mixed together. He is indeed a bit too blue on the photo, a little less he is in real but not really very much. No idea why i imagine Wolfs always like this. I did read Horus Heresy - Tales of Heresy lately and the is a pretty cool SW Story in it. I saw these guys in my imagination in this armour colour. I guess it is my brain which fcks it up everytime, haha...

Many thanks for your motivation! I am painting :)

    @Raffa
While painting i was thinking, not about painting, about your comment. Julien's critique felt so right and it just came to the right moment, the moment where my heart beats for painting again, the moment when my life calms to after windy and icy storms, the moment where my whole life did change since about one week and it seems this is only the beginning. I am really happy to live next to you and i am even more happy to have the most wonderful woman in this world at my side :) - as i told you, definatly the right moment - Kong out and painting! :)

  6. Your work in progress is better than most of my finished models.

  7. Well, you're definitely not out of practice. That's an excellent space wolf.

I'm with Raffa on this - it definitely seems to be a clearer style than many of the dirty space marines you have done before, with stronger darklining and edge highlighting. Personally I like minis better that way, as I think it helps the details "pop" more at such a small scale. I'm not sure if this was intentional or if things just happened that way when you were throwing down paint, but either way, great job.

  11. Truly amazing. When I grow up, I want to be able to paint like you. Great detail. Do you ever run a clinic?
