Chimps Captain Maulg WiP 10

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

Guess who is back... right still C.hi.m.p!

Yesterday i a had a funny phone call session with Robert, ok we have this everyday but this one was special after he showed me some of his actual WiP Progress of Captain Maulg he is working on at the moment. But before you totally get into that posting don't miss out to catch this weeks Jungle News issue No02.

He really wanted to get some Feedback from my side, but i've warned him not to do so, because i would post the photos in the jungle. It is not that Robert don't want to post in here, you have to know he is a bit shy, busy and it takes months for him to find the right words he might be searching for... finding words to fit in this case isn't very hard for me so i choose to bring you some really great photos of Chimp's Captain Maulg again... hope you enjoy - i am simply stunned by its greatness and can't wait to see further progress - this is truely epic:

You won't believe me but we had some great ideas to make this very intresting. Can't wait to see it! Can't wait to see it! Can't wait to see it! Still ...

Drop a line to tell Robert what you might think, i told him very often that this is something i have never seen before but he doesn't believe me i guess... i can understand him, when i am thinking back to the sketch this project bases on:

And how it all started from a Resin Copy of Artefactory's Trollking Maulg:

Always remember - do some sketches :)

Keep on happy painting!
Regards
Roman

  3. This is totally freaking awesome! Already at this WIP stage it is one of my favourite projects!

    Is there any chance Robert will cast those tentacles? I would love to have some for my gaming board!

  4. @Cianty: I guess it would be very expensive to cast the tentacles. Look how huge they are, lol. They would cost around 200 Euros or so if they would be casted in resin. (Or even more, don`t know but it would be VERY expensive).

    Yep that is really freaky awesome. I really wonder about Robert`s patience, I would rather die than to make such a gigantic project. The tentacles look fantastic and really monstrous.

  7. Sind die weiblichen Verzierungen von Bronze Age Miniatures?
    Es ist übrigens ein unglaublich cooler Mix Realität und einer Art Comicsyle!
    Ich bin gespannt wie das fertige Ergebnis aussehen wird.

  9. Fantastic! I was hoping for more Captain Maulg just the other day. Epic is certainly the right word for it. I'm very excited to see more.

  10. Thanks Roman for this funny posting.
    You should know, I didn't want to post yet, because I'm a chimp and there is only little progress to show so far. At the moment it feels like the things left to do become more and more and my self set timelimit comes closer and closer. That means a little preasure - but I like that!

    @cianty
    Casting the tentacles? hmmmm ... sorry, I can't see a way without cutting them to pieces. But what I can do, is writing a tutorial about how to sculpt a one, when I'm finished. Believe me - it's easier than you might expect and also very cheap.

    @Anonymous
    The ladies are from ReaperMiniatures. I only cut away some parts to fit them in place and make them look like caryatids of a pimped ship.

    @demi_morgana
    If you really want to build a ship-diorama on your own, I recommend the shipmodelling-book by Mr. Mondfeld to you. But not before I have lift my curses from it. - these details with all the ropes ... uah .. I get totally insane only thinking about it. ;-)

    Thank you all for your kind comments - you really kick a chimp's ass going on with it.
    I'm very glad, you like it so far. :)

    Cheers
    Robert

  11. Hey Rob, could i ask you what kind of material do you use to sculpt the tentacles? It looks really comfortable. Thank's in advance.

    P.s. outstanding work as always, you rule dude!

  12. @Vittorio ... and everyone else interested :)
    Glad you like!
    The tentacles are sculpted with fimo soft. At Mati's sculpting-workshop i got to know the advantages of Super Sculpey but in this case i chose fimo because of it's resistance against mechanical influences after baking. If you knew how often the ship did fall from the table, you'd know what I mean. ;-)

    I used a threaded rod to give it the basic shape and stability and wraped aluminium-foil around it to bring in more volume. A lot of wire wraped strongly around the tentacle fixes the foil and helps the fimo not to get out of place all the time. No suckers yet, just a bit of texture on the "back" and right in the oven.
    The suckers were made in a second step. It's really easy - and the softness of fimo soft helps a lot getting this elastic look of the suckers.

    @all
    Have to thank you again for blowing some wind into my sails with your kind words and can't await playing around with colours soon.
    Pleasant anticipation is massive. ;-)

    Cheers
    Robert

  13. Hello there.
    Just new to your world.
    Props, it's a huge sum of work you've done so far. I'm abashed by the quality of your tentacle sculpting. Is there a way to try and do some via a tutorial of sorts ?
    Thanks.
