Review: Private Coaching with Christoph

by Roman aka jar

Good Morning Jungle,

time for another private coaching review.
Teaching so many different topics these days, it is really beautiful.

This time Christoph visited me for his third or fourth (??) private lesson. This time his topic sounds simple: "Learn to paint black and white!", but man, he had to study...

This is what Christoph said about his coaching experience:

"Painting black and white had always been a challenge for me. Most of my “black" looked like dark grey or brown. As for white I also struggled with just how dark a shadow should be amongst other things.

When I gave the topic to Roman I told him it would be “ebony and ivory” hoping he would sing it on his Instagram introduction to the coaching……

We started out with some fun exercises finding just the right contrast STRECKE for different black articles paced in different light situations. This opened my eyes quite a bit as I usually had the mid-tone to light and also the highlights muuuuuch to light.

I then got to practice on a mini giving Murata from Ilyad Miniatures a nice silky Kimono in the ambience of a fresh green garden.

On the second day we renounced the dark side and focused on white. Roman had a cool exercise for me again to start out. He’d prepared a roll of paper towels with some colorful paper underneath and different light from above. I’d then try to mix the colors on my wet palette (which I also learned how to organize much better). I could test the success of my mixing directly on the towel and was surprised how light the shadows were. The recap on both days for ambience and light colors was much appreciated.

When starting to transfer the knowledge to the mini I went a bit overboard with the colorful shadow which ended up being a lot of fun. The mini will be placed on a glacier to justify the colorful shadows :-)

In the end I did the shadow quite a few times trying to figure out how to best get it colorful and still nicely blended into the light. In the end it worked best for me to go from a desaturated shadow to the mid-tone and lights and glaze in the color afterwards. The mini is a banner bearer from the knights of the light from Ilyad minis.

My three recommendations coming out of this coaching

Book a private coaching with Roman – learning a ton and lots of happy painting.

Read the Black Moon Chronicles graphic novel where both of my characters stem from.

Don’t start collecting minis from companies that are defunct more than a decade like Ilyad."

- Christoph

Thank you for your continous will to learn from me, Christoph. It is always a pleasure to welcome you at the studio and teach you a thing or two. Thank you for your friendship, our happy painting memories and good talks!

Keep on happy painting!
Yours,

Roman

FM: Imperial Fist Space Marine

by Roman aka jar

 Hi Jungle,

during a private coaching with Sebastian I dived deep into the topic of "How to paint grimdark".
This was one of my explanation pieces, a grimdark Imperial Fist Space Marine, full of well balanced light and shadow, battleworn and weathered.

I hope you like him!

Review: Private Coaching with Florian

by Roman aka jar

 Hey Jungle,

time for another private coaching review.

After we had to end Florian's latest coaching earlier due illness we were eager to set a new date for the next coaching session and planned to dig deeper into the Frazetta style.

This is what Florian said about the Coaching:

"After we unfortunately had to end our last coaching session early, I was very happy that we could finally continue. In the end, the break had been really good. In the meantime, I was able to implement what I had learned in a big project, and we could now build on the experience. I can completely repeat my positive feedback after the last coaching!

I had two very intensive days, during which Roman pushed me again and again to, but never beyond, my limits. In addition, I became aware of how strong the positive effects on my mental well-being such a coaching also has. Two days with a teacher who encourages you in such a positive way are incredible motivating. In addition, I was completely at peace for the two days and was able to temporarily forget all the crises in the world. In fact, I have come out of every workshop so far, and now also from the coaching sessions, with extremely high, and long-lasting motivation. I am really looking forward to the next opportunities."

 - Florian

This is what Florian worked on and finished during the break in between the two sessions.

- Florian

Again this time we had some splendid time and were able to dive deeper into the colorful mind of Frank Frazetta. I prepared more analysis and in depth color training as we proceed:

Florian's first training ground to put the new input to use and to build up on his own experiences from the prior training was this ghostly Knight by Games Workshop:

After this Florian was eager to also learn a bit about my speedpainting technique. Paint a Zombie in 15 Minutes. Florian used a bit more, but still speedpainted these two in a record time, putting all his knowledge together in a cutted diamond moment:

It has been my absolute pleasure to host you again at the studio, Florian.
Thank you for the good talks about life, love, death and robots.

Thank you for trusting my teaching skills!

Keep on happy painting!
Roman

News: Massive Etsy Update!

by Roman aka jar

 Good Morning Jungle,

time for a quick update what is happening on my end beside Coaching sessions and diving deep into my project pile. I can tell I am really enjoying to teach again. In person, but also with really beautiful tutorials and step by steps full of content via etsy.

I do have a little guilty conscience about writing most of my tutorials for etsy in the meantime, on one hand. On the other hand, I have not. It is very motivating recieving so much great and positive feedback for it and it makes me prepare more in depth tutorials. It is also a great opportunity for my self employment to build up knowledge there.

Why I do not write any tutorials for MV?
Well, it seems the time for blogs is somewhat over. Not many people read anymore, videos are the new thing and I do not like to present my knowledge in video format. Neither do I want to write free tutorials here which content is then probably used for a different person's youtube channel. Do not get me wrong, it is great to see things like the UHU glue tutorial or How to create tree fungi from tabacco used in youtube videos. Of course it is fine when people are inspired and use these old classics from the MV Jungle in their content, but somehow it does not feel right to add all of my knowledge for free use to everyone to generate clicks and money with it in their projects (youtube content).

Well, this above is all fine, but I hope you understand my point here. Massive Voodoo will see some future changes and these days some monkeys are thinking about making a Massive Voodoo Podcast to step up MV into the new age. Often we are talking together and see that most of our talks have Podcast quality and that the content would be interesting to many. At least we hope. We will talk about this more when the fruits are more ripe.

Well, etsy.
Yes, a lot is happening there - here is an update for you!

Review: Private Coaching with Nick & Yannick

by Roman aka jar

 Hey Jungle,

recently I was coaching Yannick and Nick from Luxembourg!
Nick made this a suprise birthday gift for his friend, Yannick and we had some really cool days in our coaching. Not only good talks and chats about life, but we diggged deep in the topics the two buddies wanted to learn from me:

- Improving their Speed when painting Gaming Miniatures
- Improving their technical skills
- Learning more about color theory
- Learning to use the airbrush in this process

We did quite a lot of theory and training before we actually started to work on the miniature projects both brought with them. Also enjoyed tea, good chats and music in the meantime.

This is what Nick said about the coaching:

"On Monday and Tuesday this week I had the chance to take part in a coaching session with @romanlappat.miniatureart. In short: it was pretty amazing and Roman is a fantastic teacher.

I probably started out like most people watching and learning from youtube videos. Some might have joined one of the many patreons out there and are getting some direct feedback or video sessions. However, sitting down for two full days, face to face, with your teacher cannot be beat. The simple fact that ,when you try something and it looks off, you can simply go "hey teach..." helps a lot. That is something that's missing from youtube videos.

We started out talking about the basics, color mixing and volumes, and some exercises to go along with that. We tried to mix our own skin color, and we took some pre-mixed colors tontry and replicate the mixture. Super helpful and enlightening stuff, but not something I would do at home. Even with the occasional commission it is still a hobby for me and when I find the time, I like to paint and not do color mixing exercises even if they might be quite helpful.

We then did a practical application on some space marine helmets, which have a lot of different volumes. We followed that with an entire model. I picked the Pit Fiend from @loot.studios , and my friend, I had the coaching with, picked 4 tzeench models from Warhammer.

Finally, everything we did came together for the speedpainting, where we tried to apply everything we learned in just 25 minutes. And I think for the tabletop our Zombies turned out great. It is definitely something I am keen on doing more of in the future and the more I do it the quicker and better I'll get. To finish off the coaching Roman took some pictures of our models from the workshop and of models we brought along to show off.

Overall, I learned a lot that I'll try to incorporate in my future models. If you ever get the chance I can only recommend taking part in one of Roman's workshops."

I want to thank you both for the beautiful two days full of learning and fun!
Thank you for travelling to learn from me!

Keep on happy painting, Nick and Yannick!
Best Wishes,
Roman
