Tutorial - Painting a freehand for the gaming table

by Roman aka jar

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

Heyho.

Another Tutorial rolling in finally. The last weeks did pass without much going in here, but i guess this will change now. There are different things planned and organised in the deep bedrock of the jungle the apes are ready to rumble again. Maybe :)

This one is an old tutorial of mine i did about one and a half year ago. I simply do the translation now with a cup of coffee... it is about painting a freehand and how i went on this one. Be sure there will be other articles about this topic sooner or later as there are a million ways to do so.

Theory

I did a comission about 10 Khorne demons for the gaming table with an involved standard bearer and that standard should pop out of the unit. So i did a little sketch and preparation first.

I wanted to start with a pencil, drawing the motive on the banner - in theory it would look like this. First finding the middle of the banner by drawing a middle line and some ugly sketches of this idea on paper:

About the motive i was thinking about something like those ideas... always remember a sketch should not take more than 1 minute of your time - it is a sketch, something to hold on or look after while doing the real thing. Motive ideas, really evil demon faces, muhahahaaharrrr:

I did choose the third one. Ok, still theory i planned what i want to do when it comes to the model, a little colour sketch:

Wrrroooooaaarrrrr! I am an evil demon banner! Wrrrroooooaaarrrrr! Wrrr...ok...

Practical Experience

I did start the banner on a white primer with a basecoat of bleached bone. Please mention that this has been done for the gaming table, a quick freehand, nothing too special:

Pencil sketch, done on the bleached bone basecoat with a pencil:

A mix of Scab Red and Bleached Bone for the first glazed shadows:

Pure glazes of Scab Red for intensing the shadows, 2 ~ 3 times:

Mixing in a tip of Chaos Black into the Scab Red, about 30/70 for more definition of the shadows:

A glaze from scab red + bronzed flesh was used to rework the lights:

Intensing the lights with bringing in a tip of Bleached Bone and Ivory:

Final rework with some glazes of Scab Red and Chaos Black to bring in more definition. The banner was then splattered with some blood as it stands for the God of Blood and Skulls, Kho... Wrrrroooaaarrrr!

As mentioned above this is a banner for the gaming table so i ended here... i hope this little article helps some of you on how to start on such things...

Keep on happy painting!

posted by roman, jarhead, kong

Aloa,

i am still a little stunned by the all the impressions of the past weekend, but i am trying to concentrate and bring up some more infos around this great weekend itself. This posting won't show a lot about the time in Ingolstadt, there will be others soon with a lot of great moments. As we had a painter's Camp at Raffa's from wednesday til monday during the Duke of Bavaria time we also finished some miniatures during the night time. I want to say big thanks to everyone who was with us and swung his brush these days, naming those great persons will be done now: Max, Sabine, Bianca, Kurt, Ben, Robert, Raffa and me. What a funny time we had i can only describe with one name: Ben Komets!!

I now will show you some of the miniatures that have been finished during these days or simply stood around to look at them while we had our nerdy Nerdcamp at Raffa's flat. Raffa was so kind to take pictures of them (also some videos, but this will be told another time):

Major Drake Dreadful
painted by Ben, Smog, 54 mm

God's must be crazy
painted and sculpted by Raffa, 28 mm, won Fantasy Master Open and Best of Show / Fantasy

My latest painted Huscarl won a Bronze medal in historical Master Painting, don't ask me why :)

We did paint some more miniatures but we still have to make some photos. At this point i would love to give my credits to everyone who won something, but most impressive was the fact that the number of entries increased to 900 at this years show. That is truely the biggest win of all. Oli, if you are reading this, you are totally awesome, your Fantasy Master Gold is well deserved!

So far, read you soon with Part 3 :)

Duke of Bavaria 2010 - Part 1

by Raffa aka Picster

posted by Raffa, Picster, Capuchin,....

Hey everyone!

*phew* after one week of hardcore painting, staying awake too long, eating unhealthy food, driving around in a big car, gazing at superb miniatures in way too hot rooms and other nerdy stuff we finally survived the Duke of Bavaria 2010 :)

Thanks to Bianca for taking so many photos!

What a GREAT time! Everyone who wasn't there: You really missed a incredible event, be sure to come next year.
The Miniatures there were so amazing it made me speechless, it took me 4 breaks before i could finish looking through the Pegaso display.... else i would have started to cry...

Oh and not just the miniatures were amazing, everyone was so friendly to each other that every minute on the Duke was pure joy. Meeting new people and see others you haven't seen in a while is always a great thing. At this point i hope everyone got home safely and everyone else could enjoy this event the same way i did :)

We will post new pictures, videos and stuff when we'll finish/find/have it.... yeah you read right, videos :)

Stay tuned!

I hope you like our two versions of this model, if so feel invited  to drop a comment on what you think. For sure also feel invited to do so if you don't like something. We are always on the hunt to improve ourselves.

I am really surprised how different the same miniature can look like. I like Raffa's more but that must be some kind of painter's paranoia. Paranoia! Paranoia! Attentione! Paranoia!

Keep on happy painting!

Cow of War! - update

by Raffa aka Picster

Posted by Picster, Raffa, Capuchin...

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH!!!!

Here's my current work in progress project :)
It's the minotaur from Allen, it's a real joy to paint, no unneccesary details, superbly sculpted muscles....

First i wanted to paint him in an indian style with a red dot on the forehead and henna tattoos but then i found out only women wear the red dots and so i gave him the God of War tattoo as i think it perfectly fits him :)

Here's another picture with the whole body.

Today will be a wild posting day so prepary yourself ^^

Cheers,
Raffa

EDIT: I made a newer picture, this guy is going fast :)

... really a lazy typer these days in the jungle. Praying failed, the vulcano was stronger, sad but somehow everything happens with a reason. Strange in here i know.
I think it might get back tosome kind of normal after the Duke of Bavaria next weekend.
Strange days :)

I feel like this these days... somehow, having no idea if i make it in time with my projects for the Duke, still got no MVW my own ... ahh, but i got the new Computer since Friday and i am completly overwhelmed by all the work i did on my old one, no idea where to start the new one, haha... let's keep it spartanic and lazy typing-mode, but i guess i could show some WIPs again, after i am preparing a step by step article about the Arkvenger :) - damn i am too stupid to do everything at the moment with the new computer - to show you them i need to install stuff and things and i stay lazy with that - i go painting :)

Mexican Dancing Horses in my head :)

Keep on happy painting!

Let's pray...

... to whatever god or greater being you want to pray but you gotta do it as the ash clouds of the volcanic blast in iceland totally confuses the european airport departures... and Ben and Raffa want to go to Paris this weekend to Games Day... oh dear, Ben is also in the Jury... oh dear... Now everyone please join our mass prayers for their flight to go...

While doing so you can listen to my songs of the day:

Flogging Molly - If i ever leave this world alive

Satan, lend me a dollar

Not much going on in the jungle lately, except this anoying ebay auctions  all the time and finally i had some good red wine since a long time yesterday night... wow, that was great, haha.We are a bit in hectic about Games Day France and the upfollowing Duke of Bavaria next week... strange days... it all gets weird.

Thanks to Michael for sending me this - this is how i felt this morning after the good red wine:
HAHA...

And i have some previews... some strange things i am working on at the moment. Just to show that it is not boring at my workbench these days... it is hardcore and i love hardcore :)
